A flake broke away, revealing damp, clay-rich mud beneath. Warren, busy at the work surface, tossed her a quick grin; their banter drifted through warm air that smelled of grass and iron. Without naming a plan, she scooped thick paste from the bucket below, poured a ribbon of hose water to soften it, and stirred until small bubbles began to burgeon along the edge. The fresh mud patched the split neatly, yet the tight-knit row of smaller cakes beside it trembled as her elbow nudged the uneven plank.

A low slump followed: water from the mix had trickled along the wood, soaking the base of Warren’s tallest cake until its sides shimmered. If she had ignored the crack, that tower might have remained firm, yet the choice was already wet under her fingertips. She tried to make amends, sliding her own patched cake a hand’s width back to share the drier centre, though the patch’s resolution now showed a faint ridge. Warren lifted his sagging tower and laughed, shrugging mud from his wrists. Zelda steadied the plank with one palm, then eased a flat twig beneath the tower, letting the sodden base find support. The ridge on her repair stayed visible, and the tower’s wall bowed slightly, but both shapes held. Around their ankles, the puddle thickened where the nozzle kept dripping; Zelda brushed mud from her palms, and the hose continued to tap amber drops into the shallow pool.
