English 原文
Only a thumb-length smear of thick grease lay in the round tin, its pale surface ribboned by earlier scoops. The spare grease had already been scraped thin by earlier crews. Beside it, Warren gripped the cold iron windlass whose knurled handle felt grainy where dried grease had turned dusty. He planted both boots on the towpath, firm at the centre yet already softening into damp give near the stone edge. The left paddle had been lifted a minute earlier, and water bubbled through the underwater slot with a deep velvet rumble. A coarse hemp rope hissed across his palm as the narrowboat drifted forward, its fibres rough and slightly sticky from spray. Harriet paced along the balance beam, almost jogging in place to stay warm, then flicked foam from her sleeve with quick taps.
The boat nudged the slimy stone wall; Warren unlocked the right paddle as well, an action that would spice it up with extra flow. The second crank required two steady turns, each push forcing stiff metal teeth to grind, leaving a delightful tingling along his palms. Fresh water roared through, and a miniature whirlwind of amber silt twisted upward, brushing the algae band with swirling grit. Almost at once the chamber’s surface tilted and the bow listed, the rope creaked, and Warren added another loop around the bollard. He even wedged the spare boat hook between timber and stone to stop drift, yet the angle worsened until plates clinked inside the cabin. A heavy clot of clay-brown water then bulged near the unclogged valve, showing why one side kept rising faster. Warren’s shoulders tightened; he paused, hearing Harriet’s boots thump the beam like a slow drum.
He reversed the last change, lowering the right paddle three turns until the handle shuddered and the inflow softened to a hush. Water on both sides equalised slowly; the boat straightened and the rope slackened, sliding over his skin with a calmer grain. He pulled the wedged hook free, wiped slim film from its ash shaft, felt the beam move easier beneath one push. Behind him the lock-keeper’s clipboard tapped against a coat pocket, yet the adult stayed silent, watching the system find its own rhythm. Downstream, a duck drifted under the bridge shadow, its wake tracing the same gentle angle that now crossed the chamber. Upstream, Harriet flicked another leaf fragment onto the dark pool, and the tiny disc spun toward the gate like a slow coin.
