Pivot in the Pavement Seam-

English 原文
Flora pulled the white chalk across the warm pavement, tracing the dowel’s steel-grey shadow as it crept forward. The blue stick in her hand, still youthful in colour though worn short, slipped from her fingers and dropped straight into a narrow seam between two slabs. The chalk had been trapped so tightly that only a dusty edge remained visible. She knelt and tried to hook it out with another stub, yet the gap’s magnitude defeated every angle her fingers could reach. A grandparent on the shaded bench glanced up from a sketchbook and murmured, “Take your time.” Meanwhile, a breeze flipped the reference card against the chalk box, its corners clicking like loose dice and nudging the dowel until the shadow wobbled out of line.
A cloud rolled over, blotting the shadow entirely; when sunlight returned, the tip had shifted beyond the missing mark. If the cloud had lingered longer, the edge would have vanished completely. Flora eyed the trapped blue stub again. The seam gripped it so firmly that it stood like a tiny post. Realising the same tight hold that had blocked her could offer steadiness, she pressed a fresh yellow stick against the exposed rim, letting the wedged blue piece act as a pivot. She swung the yellow chalk in a gentle arc, and the line met the new shadow tip without a break. The obstacle had become the tool, and the outcome was a cleaner, smoother curve than before. As she connected the dots, the earlier cascade settled: the card now lay half-pinned under the chalk box, its free edge tapping a quieter pattern.
A penny left by some forgotten wisher glinted near the dowel base, catching stray chalk dust each time the breeze returned. The card’s single corner kept striking the box at an even pace, three soft knocks repeating against the concrete, then repeating again, steady where it had once rattled wildly.
