English 原文
Rain drummed unevenly on the tin overhang, its hollow rhythm bouncing toward the garden like a slow relay. Nell stood behind the porch screen, counting every third beat before sprinting along the caramel slate toward the gauge. A parent sat inside the kitchen where the logbook had been opened earlier, turning newspaper pages yet keeping one watchful eye outside. The soil released a mineral perfume, while fresh petrichor curled around her boots and lifted as her steps pressed wet grass. Rain paused; golden light slipped between clouds, offering a brief, demanding window for an accurate reading in the glowing cylinder. She crouched, eye level steady, but a fat canopy drip struck her hood, nudging her view below the true meniscus. The number looked lower, yet she hurried back across sandstone steps, eager to record before another burst soaked the logbook.
When the rain thinned again, she jogged back, circling the post instead of crouching, testing numbers from opposite sides. The readings disagreed; the uphill view showed eight millimetres, while the downhill face promised ten, presenting a new obstacle. Nell tapped the wooden post and saw it had been tilted by soil, barely three degrees yet enough to distort markings. If the post were truly upright, both faces would match, yet the mismatch stayed clear against the glass. She slid her pencil across the rim like a steadfast bridge, steadying her eye exactly level with the makeshift horizon. From that angle the water touched precisely nine millimetres, midway between earlier guesses that had already left her weary. She copied the value, shielded the page under her jacket, and paced carefully over slick slate toward the porch.
A sudden gust lifted fine spray, adding fresh rings inside the gauge and showing the garden could produce small surprises. Inside, the hallway clock hands continued their quiet relay of seconds toward the next reading, indifferent to outdoor interruptions. At the same hour, earthworms in the far bed pressed fresh castings above chocolate soil, while the patio roof kept drumming.
