English 原文
Someone had scattered identical flat pebbles along the gravel path at precise seven-step intervals. Late sunlight cut across each stone, turning the line into a dotted ribbon of glare that drew Palmer closer. Lyra, his companion, measured the spaces by letting her shadow glide over the bright spots. A breeze shifted the leaves, and the stones slipped from brilliance to dim patches and back. Near the fountain rail the sequence ended at a larger slab, almost a milestone. Palmer tilted that slab; a scratched number flickered under its edge when light met the surface. The figure matched the gap count, confirming a hidden order. Far off, clouds thickened; the bright ribbon tightened as the sky darkened and the first droplets pitted the gravel.
Rain deepened in minutes, so Palmer swept a handful of pebbles into his palm and hurried with Lyra toward the gazebo. Every lamp beside the path clicked on, throwing bright cones through the falling water. Under each step, footprints alternated between patches of glare and strips of gloom along the soaked path. Under the roof they found no clear bench; shallow puddles already mirrored the ceiling lights. Lyra opened her sketchpad, where she had been drawing a small catapult design during the walk. She spread the stones across one dry corner, arranging them in the same seven-step rhythm. Palmer tore the stiff back cover from the pad, folding its edge into a shallow ridge. He balanced it above the stones to block rain that sprayed under the eaves. Water kept sliding off the cover, but the exposed pages beneath began to curl upward. Grey pencil lines bled outward under the dim light, turning the catapult’s arm into a smudged shadow.
For a moment they stood still, trading a brief glance that asked who would give up which piece. He slid half the stones into his pocket while she pressed the damp sheet against a roof beam to flatten it. If the cloud had drifted away only a minute sooner, the paper would have stayed sharp. Their compromise still saved clear evidence of the pattern and spared half the drawing for later study. Minutes later the rain eased, and pale light slanted between the rafters onto the puddled floor. Palmer tapped the stones inside his pocket while Lyra lifted the rescued sketch toward the new light.
