English 原文
"Pass the muffin tray," Heath said.
Kira slid the light metal pan across the splintery plank, and Heath’s wrist flexed as he caught it. He had planned to pour smooth mud from the pale, sandy slurry bucket, but a hard crust blocked the surface. The crust resisted the wooden spoon, pushing back with dry weight and grating under the spoon’s edge like thin roof tiles. Each stab made his forearm tighten, yet only a few chips broke off. Nearby, a chipped glass jar of memories—stuffed with last summer’s pressed petals—glinted beside a row of sieves clogged by yesterday’s residue. Birdsong fluttered over the steady squelch, and a warm gust raised the earthy smell. The mix swirled lazily, strands of grass tracing a clumsy metaphor across the darker paste, while small cracks showed creeping entropy along the bucket wall.
Heath faced a clear dilemma: force water in and risk soup, or wait and lose the afternoon light. A first decision sent him toward the hose, but the slick ground around the post made his trainers skid, so he rocked back to the bucket station instead. The pause offered a quick cognitive shift. His fingers squeezed one broken crust piece; its stiffness held like thin bark. An idea clicked with the same brisk snap. He packed the pan’s rim with those crust shards, building a low ring that rose two finger widths. When he finally tipped the thin slurry, the walls stayed firm. If the layer inside rose too quickly, it would spill over the top, yet the slow pour kept everything contained. The stream was slowed by the improvised ring, and the heavier sediment settled neatly behind the barrier rather than flooding the plank.
At the drying shelf, Heath centred his crust-framed cake, and Kira placed her petal-topped version beside it. Both trays caught the sun differently: his held a rough, textured ring while hers showed a glossy surface speckled with yellow dots. Each of them watched their own portion harden, then lifted a corner of the plank together, balancing the weight on matching muddy palms.
