English 原文
A gritty scrape rolled across the cloudy ice as Wade dragged the tip of a broom-stick toward the centre patch. Paloma prowled just behind him, her boots catching brief amber flashes where sunlight skimmed the watery film. A ceramic vase waited on the stone border; cinnamon glaze shimmered under the low sun, and an intricate design of tiny vines circled its neck. Dry lavender from their last weekend getaway poked above the rim, giving off a pungent snap when the stems shifted. Nearby, a pouch held sixteen rust-tinted pebbles they planned to tuck around the stalks for weight.
Paloma tapped a heel. A soft crack spidered outward, and her boot dropped through the thinned edge. Cold water splashed, darkening the ochre leather. Without a word, Wade steadied the broom upright and offered its handle. She gripped it, slid toward the frozen-leaf spot, and stepped onto firmer ice. If the broom slipped now, both might sprawl, so Wade kept his knuckles white around the shaft. At that moment an unexpected gust rattled a twig onto the rink; the twig skittered, struck the vase, and set it spinning. The vessel would have toppled, yet its base was caught by a lucky ridge of grit left from morning sand. A delightful ring sounded as it settled upright, though two pebbles bounced free and sank into a shallow puddle.
Paloma exhaled a sharp laugh that puffed into white mist. Wade nodded, then pushed off in a measured glide across the centre. The broom moved from his grasp to hers like a lantern changing hands. Together they reached the far bank, one at a time, and lined the lavender with the remaining stones. The warm patch on the sun-lit wall accepted the vase; thin steam curled where damp glaze met heat. Eight rust-flecked pebbles clinked at the pouch corner.
