Kestrel balanced the stone on a shallow mound of packed earth beside two mossy ruts that once guided carts along this forest thoroughfare. The hidden marker plate sat somewhere above a wall of tender fern shoots; the edge of its copper circle flashed whenever the wind bent the fronds. She climbed onto the new platform and gained perhaps five centimetres, still far below the glinting metal. A low branch brushed her sleeve, and sticky resin clung to her fingertips.

A second stone, hauled from the brook bank, landed with a muted thud. The sudden weight shook the ferns; startled insects scattered upward, and a robin dived to snap at them. Its wings rattled dry oak leaves; the sound jolted a squirrel, whose leap pulled a vine loose until it began to unravel downward. The swinging vine bumped Kestrel’s wobbly stack, but her boot pressed hard, stopping the sway before the stones toppled. She had not confided her earlier doubt, yet she added a third stone, only as thick as a book. The stack rose just enough. Sunlight, now lower, struck the plate full on, and at that precise angle the arrow became clear, pointing left. Resin still tacky on her skin kept two grains of ochre sand glued to her palm, and a gentle tremor travelled through her calves as she stepped off the stones toward the revealed path.
