English 原文
Pebbles clicked in steady bursts as Willa’s palms stacked them across the narrow gap when Yannick crouched beside her. A broad shale slab lay nearby, lightning-veins flashing across it, and the novelty pulled his hand toward the smooth weight. From his crouch he could overlook the wide, glassy sheet upstream, even while the narrow throat kept singing beside him. Water kept diving between the fixed boulders, rattling smaller stones that rang like hurried bells. He wedged the slab upright, yet pressure twisted it sideways and a brittle crack split the layered stone. Half the slab clacked downstream, and cold spray struck his boots while a hushed echo rose from the leaking seam.
Willa hummed over her stones, so Yannick stepped upstream where the water softened and allowed better appreciation of each hidden tone. At the clay bank, his fingers scooped a dense, root-speckled lump; it gave a muted squelch as fibers tore free. He packed the lump into a flat patty, listening to tiny bubbles pop inside like distant drumbeats under wet skin. Back at the driftwood pile, branches rattled together, and one straight stick knocked out a hollow tock each time current nudged it. He lifted that branch, shook loose trapped grit, then tapped its end on a shale ledge, judging the steadier tone. A flattened limb had been left to dry on the sunlit bank, and its bark crackled like thin paper. While he walked the branch to the gap, tree shadows drifted across the riffle, cooling the water’s hiss into a lower pitch.
Near the gap, the broken half of the shale slab had washed against his boot. It rocked in the current, tapping the leather with a steady tick that matched the branch’s faint knocks. Yannick gripped the surviving piece lengthwise, slid it flat beneath the branch, and pressed clay over their seam like putty. The combined weight settled; water slapped once, then dropped to a low murmur that faded under continuing pebble clicks. Yannick lowered the branch-capped slab deeper until the murmur thinned to one quiet hiss.
