English 原文
Garner hooked a finger under the swinging cloth chute and pulled it toward the wooden collecting bin. The chute had been shoved off-centre earlier, so its strap already rubbed hard against the vat. The deep hum from the shaft vibrated through the floorboards, while overhead gears clacked a syncopated metal beat. His tug overshot the centre; flour hissed past the rim, pattering onto boards like dry rain on a drum. The falling flour nudged the lightweight bin, which rolled an inch, bumped a leaning broom, and set it wobbling. The broom toppled against the tool-nook shelf; a narrow chisel slid off, rang sharply on stone, and startled Ella. Garner reached again, but the slippery fabric twisted away, still spilling a pale ribbon that foamed around his boots.
Leaving the stubborn chute behind, Garner crossed to the grain store corner where cooler air softened the flour fog. He tugged a hessian sack free, the rough weave rasping, then dragged it across the floor toward the hopper. Ella knelt at the packing table, knotting finished bags; her quick motions were as graceful as folded sailcloth in brisk wind. A gust quickened the mill’s tempo; belts slapped louder, booming through stone like stirring tales on drums. Flour overflowed a bag she had set on the scale, so she tapped the oil can to still its clanging arc. Ella called, "Scale's tipping fast," her voice almost swallowed by the clacking overhead. Garner hoisted the sack onto his shoulder, but its drawstring held fast; he sliced it open and grain poured in a roar. The rolling rhythm seemed to enchant every loose nail, window latch, and beam, all rattling in uneven sympathy.
When the replacement collecting bin was finally ready, Garner slid it beneath the chute, now sagging farther from centre. He did not plan to adjust it; yet as he pushed the bin forward, the canvas lip brushed his sleeve. His hands rose automatically; with one smooth motion he pinched the cloth, lifted, and settled it exactly above the bin’s mouth. The spill narrowed to a steady ribbon, as clean and white as a lily petal gliding across air. Ella stepped beside him, catching flour in a second bag; both sacks puffed fuller with each thump from the stones. Garner raised the heavier bag while Ella balanced its twin, and the narrow stream of flour continued drifting downward between them.
