English 原文
All ten candles leaned inward, but the glossy icing beneath them stayed perfectly round, catching silver-blue reflections between flickers. Niall waited by the edge while Dina lifted her phone to record, and Inez arranged plates beside the slate-grey cutter. The birthday song had been sung, so breath filled his cheeks and rushed toward the candle circle in one cone. Most flames vanished at once, yet two stubborn ones bent sideways, hiding behind drifting smoke and someone’s shoulder. He leaned closer, cupped his palm to steer the air, and the final sparks dimmed with a faint hiss. Cool ceiling lights brightened immediately, sharpening his vision and revealing narrow wax ridges across the pale frosting surface. Ignoring those obstacles, he pressed the plastic blade downward, but it bowed under strain and skidded into a trench. His mental roster—slice, serve, unwrap—lost order as the cutter refused to drop cleanly through the soft sponge.
He withdrew the blade, blinked twice, and noticed the cardboard base dented where the first push went sideways. The shift from candlelight to bright ceiling bulbs had altered his depth perception just enough to spoil the angle. Inez sensed the stumble, slid a plate under the cake board, and steadied the wobbly circle with both palms. Their elbows brushed, sending a mild jolt that freed the cutter and straightened its path toward the base.
With the firmer support below, Niall pushed again; sponge parted smoothly, and frosting slid back like a calm wave. Inside the slice, a forgotten candle stub emerged, its wax column standing upright like a toy pillar from a workshop. He plucked the stub clear, placed the piece on Dina’s plate, and watched Opal tear bright paper from a box. A moment later, poppers cracked; loose streamers drifted downward, clinging to sleeves like soft blue-grey vines. At that same moment in the hallway, Maddox toyed with the switch, making kitchen bulbs blink once before settling.
