Completing the sorting before Saturday promised a quiet adventure, planting each variety under the cool morning light. Lacking the lens, she lifted a packet, rubbed seeds between fingertips, and caught an intriguing peppery scent from the basil bundles.

She pinched the smaller basil seeds into a narrow metal scoop and tipped them toward a clean corner of the tray. The scoop brushed a glass flask of soaking marigold kernels; the slight knock sent a ripple of water across the wooden lip. Droplets slid over the edge, reached the right-hand poppy pile, and clumped the powdery seeds into dark grains. Ella noticed the change, paused, and drew trays toward a sun patch on the window ledge where light could dry the spill. The move spared the basil corner, yet drying poppy grains risked scattering them again when the robin fluttered nearby. She balanced the trays by sliding a shallow wooden slat under the poppy side, raising it like a gentle ramp.

As sunlight cooled to a blue-grey stripe, her eye caught silver specks inside the shelf grain, positioned exactly along a faint groove. She ran a fingertip along the groove; hidden seeds rose like beads on string, quietly waiting beneath the surface. She left the groove uncovered, set the basil scoop beside the poppy pile, and stepped toward the door as the gardener whistled. A freed dewdrop slid off the slat, nudging one basil seed back into the groove.
