English 原文
A copper kettle, three empty glass jars, and a drip-speckled wooden spoon rested beside the gas stove. Amos stepped into the kitchen he had visited every harvest season and brushed his palms over the rough worktable. Last week the kettle handle had felt almost cool; today, after a short simmer, heat soaked through and caught Amos’s skin. Grandmother kept the flame steady and gestured at the prep counter where lemon halves waited beside a lightweight jug. The recipe needed ninety millilitres of juice, yet the jug’s etched scale still read zero. Amos rolled the first lemon half on the board and pressed hard, driving the peel flat against the grain. Thirty millilitres crept upward, the liquid clinging to the glass yet stopping below the target line.
Zola, peeling spare strawberries at the window ledge, shifted sideways to give him enough elbow room near the board. Amos raised the second lemon half; another vivid stream brought the jug to sixty millilitres—still short. A wooden thud at the doorway announced the family goose, whose proud waddle across the tiles rattled the recipe stand. Amos bent at the doorway, herding the bird back with a gentle nudge of his knee. Foam climbed over the rim; Grandmother twisted the dial down, and the swell slipped back into the kettle. Crusted sugar ringed the spoon handle, and Amos scraped it along the rim; grains slid off like sand. He grabbed the final quarter of lemon, squeezed hard, and the shimmering level finally jumped to ninety millilitres. The etched line met the liquid at once, and every jar on the far counter suddenly seemed ready for filling.
Amos carried the lightweight funnel from the jar station and steadied it above the first glass neck while Zola ladled. The ruby ribbon of jam flowed cleanly through the copper spout and slid into the waiting glass. A faint snap rang out, and a fissure crossed the jar’s shoulder, pushing them to shift the funnel toward next container. Grandmother muttered about wasted glass, yet her ladle kept moving, sending another thick wave toward the funnel. A small brass pick waited beside the cooling rack, its tip already stained crimson from earlier batches. With it, Amos would scribe the date into each soft disc once the surface clouded. Before reaching for the labels, he touched the kettle handle; warmth lingered, and he stood holding the metal while jam kept sliding.
