Third Sinker Sends the Bobber Beyond the Willow-

English 原文
"The float drifted left."
Merritt pressed his bare heel against a warm ridge in the plank and steadied the bending rod. He wanted the bobber to reach the darker patch beyond the willow roots where larger fish gathered before dusk. The first cast slapped the surface, yet the soft bait flew off and painted a brief circle of ripples. A single split sinker pinched on the line had proven too light, so the hook barely travelled halfway. He explored the tackle box at the shore end, fingers brushing past cool hooks until they found another small weight. Carrying it back across the splintery boards took seconds, yet each step made the dock hum underfoot. The spool had been packed tightly all winter in a drawer, leaving stiff, stubborn memory coils.
He crimped the second sinker beside the first, then sent the line swinging in a smooth arc over the shade zone. The extra mass stretched the monofilament farther, yet the bobber still stopped short, resting in clear water with myriad tiny rings. Beneath those rings, silver minnows scattered suddenly, an organic burst that nudged a floating twig of flotsam toward the tight line. The twig brushed the taut nylon, and the light contact startled a perched frog which sprang, splashing a wave over the surface. That wave rolled under the dock, rocked the mooring rope, and almost pulled the bobber against a post's rough edge. Merritt lifted the rod sharply, freeing the line before the hook could navigate the currents around the underwater growth.
He added a third, slightly heavier sinker, its cool metal biting into the leader with a muted click. The next cast whistled, the bobber flew past the willow fringe, and everything clicked as the line reached full stretch. It settled exactly in the shadowed pocket Merritt had measured earlier using the rod tip as a crude ruler. Tiny air bubbles rose, burst, and left small dimples that spaced themselves between the wider bands. The ripples from that placement eased into long, even bands that brushed the dock boards at steady, slower intervals. Below, the mooring rope now tapped gently against the post, pacing the calm water toward the open lake.
