English 原文
The perforated metal lid tapped the glass jar twice as a gust rocked it on the porch step. A chime rolled across the rim, then slipped into the garden where crickets stitched phrases. Ruby stepped from warm stone to damp grass; each blade hissed against her ankles. Behind her, Ulric conversed with their parent, sorting trowels that rattled inside a tin tray. “These trowels keep sliding,” Ulric said, his voice mixing with the metal rattle. She lifted the jar, and the surface hummed under her palm. The lid had been tightened by the afternoon heat, and a coat of dew now turned the metal slick. Her first twist produced only a squeak of skin against steel. She paused, rubbed the rim with the corner of her shirt, and tried again. The click that followed confirmed her observation, offering an insight: dry cloth created enough grip to free the thread.
With the lid loose, Ruby balanced it against the jar’s rim and moved toward the lawn centre, the screen door behind her drawing a long creak before settling. Fireflies blinked in scattered clusters, their flashes spaced like distant drums across the hush. One bright insect flared near the flower-bed edge; she crouched, yet its light vanished and the cricket chorus swelled, hiding its return. Dimness now formed a different barrier: stones, hose, and stems merged into one dark band, and every step sent a damp rustle that hushed the nearest sparks. She chose to stand still.
After several breaths, the insects resumed their drifting rendezvous above the jasmine, and a nearer glow steadied. She tipped the glass beneath it and clacked the lid home with a muted click. Inside the curved wall, the captured firefly looked larger than those outside; the small insight reshaped her earlier wonderment. Keeping the jar level, she headed toward the porch. Before she reached the warm stone, a tiny silver moth, caught by chance, began to beat powdery wings between the pulses. Ruby touched the jar’s cool side and watched the hidden moth flash a pale wing.
