As her sleeve brushed the hanging lavender, the bundle swung across the bright beam and scattered dull fragments into the air. The sudden sway startled a bumblebee dozing among the stems, and its graceful movements sliced straight toward the gleaming windowpane. Harriet jerked at the buzz, her knee bumping the sorting tray so thirty seeds rolled along the ledge in a wavering ribbon. Several dropped onto the cool stone floor where a small lizard basked inside a rectangle of angled light. The moving dots awakened the creature’s playful antics; it darted forward, nudged a leaning magnifying glass, and fled beneath the bench.
