Nina stepped under the low limb, the hiss of the far sprinkler beating like a slow drum behind her. Garner, an educator who read on a blanket nearby, turned one page and let it fall flat with a soft flap. Nina spotted the missing lid beneath the grass, brushed it clean, then tapped it at the quiet-comparison spot; a sharp ping echoed. She tied it back, and the renewed chord shimmered until a swirl of air made every piece collide, turning melody into blur.

The extra weight pulled the spoon sideways, and two strings twisted together. Nina frowned, palms tight around the branch, while a small bounty of bottle caps spilled from the supply box. A hollow plastic smoke detector shell slid among them and rolled toward her foot. It felt lighter than the steel lid, so she clipped the shell to one of the waiting cords. A gust passed; the shell clicked brightly, but the long cord crossed its neighbour, knotting mid-swing. If the wind grew stronger, the branch would dip even lower, and nothing would sing clearly.

Nina reached for a key ring shaped like a tiny bounty hunter, its arms frozen around an imaginary prize. She hung the figure between spoon and shell; its modest mass spaced the cords just far enough. Another breeze rattled through, letting the leaves part and open up a slim window of sky. Three distinct notes now overlapped—slightly muddied, yet each still heard. She stepped back to the listening position as the branch creaked in a tired rhythm, and she noticed faint saw marks that had always scored the bark; the limb itself leaned because several dry leaves had dropped, not only because of her chimes. A striped cat stretched beside the garden bed, twitched at the ringing mix, and padded across the sun-warmed grass, brushing clover heads aside.
