English 原文
Warm bark scraped Greer’s palms as he pressed a fresh knot against the low branch, the fibers of his string catching on tiny ridges. He aimed to add a small brass key, hoping its bright ping would stand clear of the spoon’s ring. A garden stake—long, sturdy, and cool to-touch—lay across the blanket and blocked his footing. When he tried to drag it aside, its pointed end stayed wedged under a hidden root; the shaft bent just enough to buckle against his ankle and spring back, refusing to move. Pearl, seated nearby with scissors resting on her lap, flipped a page in her book but kept silent. Greer tugged at the trapped stake once more, hissed through his teeth, and stepped back without success.
A volatile gust swept through the yard, making the hanging spoon rotate and clang against the clay disc. Strings began to twirl together, producing a muddled blur that seemed to proclaim its own confusion. Greer needed the branch lower to separate the pieces, yet the limb sat higher than his shoulders. He noticed the same garden stake: its smooth length, earlier a nuisance, offered leverage. Sliding the ridged tip against the trunk, he pressed the far end down like a seesaw. The branch dipped; chimes dipped with it; the key slipped easily onto the lowered twine. Another breath of wind arrived, lighter now, and the key struck the spoon with a crisp note while the heavier lid stayed calm, its wire loop only creaking where it had been widened by earlier swings. Greer eased the branch upward, then let the stake fall from his grip onto the blanket beside the supply box.
