He had hoped to choose two of the top-row swirls for Gwen outside, yet only their aroma slipped through the hatch before mist returned.

The entrance door banged open; a gust whisked his folded note straight out of his hand. Paper fluttered past the umbrella stand and skidded toward the outdoor bench where Gwen unwrapped a napkin. "Got it," she laughed, holding the note above her head. Max jogged across the threshold; chill air brushed his cheeks, and condensation beaded on the chilled-drink cooler beside him. By the time he thanked her and hurried back inside, the staff member had lifted a fresh tray; the former top-row pastries were already boxed for someone else. The spool jerked; its power balance felt uneven, so Max tilted the roll, easing the pull until the chrome edge of the counter steadied the ribbon’s path. He tied a simple bow, hoping the renewable energy humming above would keep the frosting cool on the walk home. Faint fingerprints fogged the box lid where his thumbs had pressed the crease.
