English 原文
Cool clay hugged Winston's palms as he flattened the slab across the slightly tilted table. Bright window light cut along the grain of the wood, making the rolling pin gleam and throwing a dark stripe behind it. He had already rolled the surface smooth, yet a faint ridge still caught the side glare near the centre. Hoping to express a crisp border, he walked four paces to the stamp shelf where large rectangles waited in shadow. The chosen handle felt cool, unlike the sun-warmed ones closer to the glass earlier that morning. Back at the slab, Winston pressed firmly; air hissed, then one edge of the pattern plunged deeper than the opposite side. The hidden ridge had been formed by denser clay, and his effort left a tilted impression bordered by a bulging ring. He tried leaning harder with both thumbs, yet the stamp only rocked, smearing shadowed streaks across the glare on the surface.
Greta at the neighbouring station glanced up and murmured, “Looks tricky,” before returning to her own sponge work. Winston set the stamp on the table and reached for an aqua sponge lying near his elbow. As his fingers lifted, the rolling pin, freed from his earlier grip, drifted down the gentle slope toward the waiting stamp. Wood hit wood with a dull thud, and the stamp toppled, its handle striking a tangle of clay tags. The tags skittered across the bright tabletop, clipping the shallow water bowl, which slid a finger’s width and touched the basin rim. A thin sheet of water leapt out, ran toward the slab, and reflected the overhead glow like a moving mirror. Before the stream reached the clay, a damp cloth previously draped on the edge sagged, fell, and blocked the flow. The cascade ended there, while a distant gurgle from the sink plumbing echoed through the bright room. Winston lifted the rescued stamp, settled it over the twice-dampened ridge, and pressed evenly until the pattern sat level. He stepped back to show Greta, unaware that the thin mirror of water kept sliding beneath the slab in the table’s shadow. Under the slab, the reflected line crept slowly toward the table leg, bending whenever a tag fragment redirected its path.
