English 原文
The brass padlock lay on the frozen lake, its shackle gaping where a door would normally meet it, a wrong object in a vast place. Green crystals had begun to corrode the metal, mapping islands of age along the spine; beside it, meltwater from yesterday’s weak sun had frozen again, trapping faint air threads like a captured leak. Tamsin stepped from the granite boulder onto solid ice, breath clouding and drifting away. A crow shook frost from a birch and croaked, the sound skating outward until the lake answered with a deep, lethargic groan sliding beneath her boots.
She crouched and lifted the chill weight. Gloves removed, she polished the body with a sleeve until a patch of brass glimmered. To keep the lock from sliding, she collected pebble after pebble, an intricate circle forming around her knees—birch bark scraps, a snapped twig, even a curl of lichen joined the quiet cavalcade of additions. Hardly had the final pebble touched down when a second, sharper groan passed below, urging her to stillness. Behind her, a muffled call drifted from shore, “All good?” — a question caught by distance rather than command.
The circle now crowded the scene, yet nothing felt settled; her hand paused above it, fingertips warming against the padlock. As though the clutter itself muffled thought, she brushed half the ring aside with one sweep, pebbles ticking over the ice in widening spirals. It was the faint etching of overlapping waves that shifted her assumption: not a security device after all, but a keepsake once carried for ornament. Only then did she notice the hinge moving freely, the barrel hollow and light, more locket than lock. A gust rattled birch curls overhead, mirroring the clean space she had made beneath.
Snowflakes the size of ground pepper began to fall, settling on the cleared ice and outlining the padlock’s softened edges. Tamsin straightened, the discarded stones already blending with ridges of older snow, their brief order erased. No explanation rose for how such a trinket floated to mid-lake, and she let the question remain, as silent as the water sealed below. The crow flapped away, the ice sang a lower note, and Tamsin slipped the unlocked padlock into her coat pocket.
