English 原文
"Where did the bank begin?" Eve called to the empty air, tracing the faint mud line with her boot. The thawing pond, once a white plate, now carried a dark collar of water that flashed under slanting light. Hardly had the birch branch touched the surface when concentric rings slid outward, breaking against the opaque centre. Yesterday the ice had formed a ragged border here, yet overnight the mild wind appeared to have carried warmer currents straight across the pond. Candle ice, loosened overnight, grated softly, and a thread of meltwater threaded between bank stones, its chill climbing past her laces. A single birch leaf drifted within the new moat, turning like a stopped compass needle; its presence posed a quiet puzzle that tugged her forward.
Her gloves off, she pressed a knuckle against the slushy rim and marked the retreat: a finger-width since yesterday’s visit. Smooth granite under the water looked freshly washed. Above the line, winter scars persist—lichens bleached gray and a rust fleck where a forgotten nail had been incorporated into the rock years ago. Seldom had the ice sounded so alive; pops answered distant trickles, and air bubbles shuffled upward, trying paths that changed each moment. Steam, thin as silk, lifted where sunbeams met the seepage, crossing her view like restless threads before disappearing into the brighter air. Midway along the shore she stopped, thigh muscles tightening, because a green smudge drifted under the thinning sheet. The color deepened, darting as the ice cracked again, then stalled directly below her boot, waiting.
A pulse in the ice released a wedge, and the smudge rose with it; sunlight flashed on varnish. It was the tiny painted chameleon that surfaced, not the sliver of pond algae she expected earlier. Last autumn she had skipped that stone toward the centre, laughing when it spun like any ordinary pebble. Months of pressure had begun to dehydrate the paint, yet the lime and indigo pigments persist in the creature’s eye. She lifted the stone, water dripping from its edges, and warmth from the sun quickened against her skin despite the cold breath of the pond. For a moment she turned the chameleon between her fingers, noting how the abrading crystals had loosened every colour except that bright eye. Then she slid it gently onto the wet granite, stepped back, and the drifting birch leaf circled once more around the newly opened water.
