English 原文
Opal pressed her mittened palm against the frost—circle after circle bloomed clear on the pane, each one a tiny peephole toward the pale garden beyond. She knew this window as well as the back of her own hand; many winters had begun with the same ritual, yet the glass looked busier than memory allowed. Breath clouded, melted, refroze, and overlapping halos piled up until the fern-shaped crystals disappeared beneath a clutter of thumb-sized skylights. A low clink drifted from the kitchen. “Porridge is on the table,” called Clyde, though the words reached her as little more than warm breeze. Hardly had Opal placed the last paper star on the sill when a fresh sweep of frost advanced, knitting white lace between the openings.
Vigilance steadied her wrist while she traced the newest spread, watching filaments spiral like a frozen vortex that tried to surpass yesterday’s pattern. She tapped a narrow notch in the wooden frame—an old dent that once anchored a holiday ribbon—and used it as reference, then began to sketch out a larger clearing with the side of her thumb. Crystal crumbs drifted downward, catching light before they vanished. Her fingertip hovered; she had planned another circle, yet the pane already felt overcrowded. The moment stalled, her sleeve brushing the sill and stirring a faint creak from the floorboard beneath her slippers.
Her breath held, she drew back two steps, the chill of retreat prickling her knuckles. From that distance the window resembled a map no one could read, islands of clarity floating in a white sea. A pulse of indecision rose; instead of adding, she laid the paper star flat on the radiator and rubbed away the largest peephole she had just cleared. The frost misted over the vacant space almost at once, knitting finer than thread, until only a subtle shimmer marked where her print had been. Through the remaining circles she noticed, for the first time, how the garden’s old swing still moved on its chain, rocking very slightly under the weight of nothing at all.
Opal lifted the star again, thought better of it, and set it inside a book on the nearby shelf. The room quieted. On the pane, five modest openings remained, spaced farther apart than before, each framing a different shard of morning light. Meltwater ran from one circle, curved around the dent in the frame, and rested as a bright bead on the sill, its surface trembling once before turning solid.
