Joystick Lag and a Sunken Buoy Frame-

English 原文
Iris eased the joystick left. On the main monitor, a pair of narrow fins tilted, scattering silt in a spiral that widened with every thruster pulse. The shift revealed the hidden linkage. As the craft angled, a ballast plate slid along a rail, clicked into a notch, and only then did the light beam swing. Rarely had Iris guided a machine she could not see with her own eyes. Here the mechanism declared itself through movement alone, its gleam flickering against the dim chamber walls. It was the one-second lag that unsettled her most, the brief interval in which intention floated free before confirmation.
That morning her pencil had sketched coastal avifauna swooping beyond the window. Those sketches relied on instant feedback; wing beats matched her strokes, letting her construct silhouettes before the birds banked away. Down here, the dichotomy was stark: the joystick demanded prediction, and every correction risked overcompensation. Her wrist angled, the stick settled deeper, yet the screen still showed the previous command, a luminous afterthought. The juxtaposition of graphite smudges remembered and live pixel bloom observed tightened her grip. She let the ROV coast until the silt hung motionless again.
A glint formed at the lamp edge, silver against midnight blue. She nudged forward, paused, then retracted a millimetre, second-guessing the current. The fins obeyed late, and the glint blurred into a wavering rectangle, its surface mottled like weathered paint. If the console were quieter, the gull outside might carry through. Yet only cable hum and sonar pings filled the room, exaggerating every misstep. Iris lifted the clipboard, comparing depth lines from earlier to the gauge now. She hesitated—had the seafloor risen or the craft sunk? The light wavered, mirroring her doubt.
She rolled the lamp a fraction right. The rectangle resolved into metal ribs around a column of white tiles, each edge scoured by steady current. Only then did she recognise a refurbished marker buoy frame, long lost and standing upright in this unseen corridor. The swirl had lifted when ballast fins tapped the frame, not when thrusters fired. A small triumph settled over her shoulders like warmer air. Nowhere on her bird sketches had a delayed echo guided her hand so firmly. Her thumb hovered above the joystick trigger.
