English 原文
Shea flattened the turquoise square against the cedar-scented desk, thumbs pressing until a crisp valley emerged. Hardly had the paper accepted the fold when a faint click rose from somewhere beneath the wooden surface. She straightened, ears pricked, and the smell of resin drifting from the open drawer curled tighter, as though acknowledging the sound. It was the desk lamp’s low hum that filled the gap, a gentle crescendo accompanying the next bend she coaxed along the wing. Every whisper of the sheet seemed amplified, the creases broadcasting their progress like distant footsteps in an empty hall.
From the corridor a metallic speaker crackled, delivering the midday broadcast of school announcements and drowning the quiet rustle of paper. The rising static forced her decision; she stood, crossed the room, and swung the window inward to hush the electric scrape. A parcel thudded onto the entry mat at that same instant; Zane’s voice followed, casual and short, “Delivery for Shea.” She padded over cedar floorboards, signed the tablet, caught the dusty canvas smell clinging to the package, then watched Zane retreat without another word. By the time she returned, the broadcast had faded to murmurs lost inside the walls.
The lamp’s circle of light no longer reached the crane-in-progress; instead it glinted off a bronze impala paperweight that had drifted toward the desk edge. A fine green patina coated the figurine, a surface that caught the warmth and released a metallic scent with a bitterness close to resentment. Were the air any drier, she supposed the weight would already have toppled, yet the slight overhang looked deliberate, as if the surface had sagged fractionally over time. Shea paused, hands hovering above the half-folded crane, then chose the weight over the paper and touched the impala’s cold flank. The instant her fingers shifted the figurine back, a concealed wooden latch sprang free beneath the desktop, revealing the source of the earlier click.
Inside the shallow compartment lay no secret—only loose shavings smelling of iron and cedar, as though the cavity had once housed a cable instead of treasure. A slow breath slipped out; the arrangement suggested bronze as lever and paper’s pressure as trigger, nothing more. She repositioned the impala, this time placing it closer to the crease pile, then lifted one corner of the sheet to watch the latch reset. Each movement released another whiff of aged resin, and the wooden catch complied again and again, a private broadcast repeating for anyone patient enough to listen. Her fingertip now rested on the narrow seam between compartment and desk, waiting to press once more.
