English 原文

Larkin stepped under the brushed-aluminium arch, leaving the fairground glare behind his shoulders entirely. With the first stride, the air tasted of warm syrup, and each inspiration carried a faint metallic tang that pricked his tongue. Coloured spotlights bounced between mirrors, juggling pink, blue, and gold beams until they flickered like sugared threads in a spinning barrel. Somewhere farther in, a melodic echo of children’s laughter chimed off unseen glass, promising a corridor that might lead nowhere at all. Keen to test the surfaces, he dug three lemon-bright mints from his pocket and began to juggle them casually, trusting their orbit more than the skittish reflections.

The first mint landed back in his palm, slick with condensation, and its sweetness lingered while he stretched a finger toward an apparently open corridor. Cool glass met the fingertip; a salty note, perhaps popcorn dust, crept onto his lip when he drew the finger thoughtfully across it. Nowhere along the corridor could he find a panel free of palm-shaped smudges, yet the prints thickened toward the left bend. His tongue tingling with the briny trace, he pocketed the mints and stepped in that direction. Lights here ran the gamut from pale tangerine to mossy green, smearing against each other until even depth seemed flavored by shifting citrus.

After three cautious turns, his footsteps produced a melodic double-beat, glass returning the tap a half-second late, and the echo drifted through dozens of reflected corridors. He moved as though the floor were coated with syrup, soles lifting slowly to avoid a sudden collision with his own image rushing forward. Mid-stride, he halted, shoulder angled, because every copy of him had stopped except one that still walked, ghostlike, inside a pane beside his elbow. Tenacity settled into the scuff marks he had already left; each grey crescent showed exactly where doubt had turned him before. What slowed him was the bitter taste that arrived when he brushed knuckles against that peculiar pane, as if cleaner still clung stubbornly to its surface. The mismatch between sight and tongue proved decisive; he withdrew the hand, then pressed gently, and the sheet swung inward on a silent hinge.

A warmer beam lay beyond, and the air tasted buttery, as though a popper had emptied seconds earlier. He repeated the earlier motion, tapping the next panel with two fingers, yet this time glass never answered, for open night stretched past the arching exit. Wind cooling the mint-sweet residue on his teeth, he let the unused mints roll inside his palm instead of juggling them again. Footsteps clicked somewhere behind the glassy labyrinth, neither urgent nor lost, and he slipped outside while colored beams kept twirling within. His fingers hovered for a heartbeat, the tapping gesture half-remembered, before the buttery breeze carried them toward his jacket pocket.
