English 原文
From the wooden threshold, Josie watched Wilder guide a bamboo rake across the gravel, each stroke sending bright shards of light sliding over the furrows. Rarely had the garden greeted her with such stark clarity, and she almost named every ridge before the tool carved it. She had paced these borders since spring, memorising the paths of stone and shadow. Yet the lines unfolding before her seemed slightly estranged, as though a silent interlude had rearranged the surface while she was away. Wilder rested the rake, tipped her a nod, and departed through the side gate without a word, leaving the pattern unfinished in the rising morning glare.
The gate clicked behind him; hinge whispering, Josie stepped onto the border stones and lifted the still-warm handle. She tried to curate the unfinished channels, yet each pull of the tines revealed another discrepancy. A ridge stood too high beside the tallest rock, its peak crumbling into points of mica that caught the glare. A crescent of gravel slanted where she remembered a straight run, showing pale underlayers of stone between the ridges. Nearby, a small, resentful pocket of moss bulged into a furrow, its green darkening as the sun began to desiccate its edges. A cloud passed, granting a brief interlude of shade, and the chill breeze slid over the garden like cool silk. “Strange,” she murmured at the uneven ground, her voice no louder than the rake’s faint hiss.
Lines accumulated: one accidental curve joined another until the surface hinted at something restless, a yearning sweep that arced toward the southern wall. What caught her breath was a single ridge curving where no curve belonged, its brightness pouring against the stone as if intentionally pointing. Josie paused mid-stroke, knuckles whitening, then retreated two steps and regarded the garden from the porch. The angle of morning glare exposed faint scratches on the bordering rock—marks clearly chiselled long ago yet invisible at noon. Now, with light raked low, the scratches aligned perfectly with the new arcs, sketching an unspoken diagram she had overlooked every visit.
She leaned the rake against the cedar post, its bamboo tines still dusted with white grains, and slid her hands into her sleeves. Wilder’s earlier strokes remained, mingling with hers, yet the joined pattern lay uncorrected; it simply glimmered, complete in its imperfection. Josie stayed a moment, hearing only the distant stream and the quiet pulse of gravel settling. Then she turned toward the gate, lifted the latch with two fingers, and stepped outside the wall. Behind her, sunlight drifted across the garden, and ridge after ridge sharpened, then softened, under that slow, unhurried shimmer.
