He wanted a low, sublime bloom that could sit beneath Tara’s crisper accents. He kept adding—one folded cloth inside the shell, another across the head’s edge—to tame the sharp overtones. Each addition dulled the voice further. Tara’s foot produced a slow shuffle across the planks, testing resonance with weight shifts. Every step told them the platform still trembled, yet the drum answered in a flat thud. Jarvis leaned closer, gave the bolts meticulous attention with the tuning key, quarter-turn by quarter-turn, yet nothing unlocked the depth he expected. His fingertip pressed the hide; no give, yet no promise in the silence under it.

Mid-adjustment he paused, bachi held mid-air, pulse rolling in his wrists. The crowd of objects around the drum now felt like insulation rather than support.
