English 原文
Heat rose from the gravel bar, the shimmer tasting like rusty coins on Zara's tongue. A thread of river mist cooled the back of her throat, adding a briny veil to the metallic heat. Between her bare feet and the water lay an oval patch of smoothed stones, cleared earlier and untouched now. She avoided that gap, working instead at its fringes, where slate fragments still carried yesterday’s river smell and a faint briny aftertaste. Every placement began with the tip of her tongue wetting her lip, as though the taste might judge a stone’s readiness.
She lifted a layered slice of slate, its broken edge sharp and salty, and settled it upon a rounded granite that clicked once before resting. A fraction of imbalance traveled through the column, leaving a sour pulse against her fingertips. Zara paused, letting her breath steady; a tremor lingered through the stones, so she searched the gravel for another counterweight. River water lapped nearby, enough to imbue each candidate stone with a bright mineral tang before she tested its weight. Only when sparks of iron flavor faded from her tongue did she commit, and the column held.
Crunching footsteps arrived at the oval patch; Zephyr approached, holding a flat sandstone dotted with dark mica like pepper flecks. "This one is wide," he murmured, stopping short of the cleared space without mentioning it. She tasted the wind again, now sweeter after crossing his canteen’s wool cover, and nodded. Together they lowered the sandstone toward the apex, yet the slate below refused the angle, sliding off with a soft grind. Zephyr slid the column apart by a fraction and slipped in a thinner pebble, a quiet compromise, while she guided the sandstone back. The new alignment forged a taller silhouette, its shadow rippling over the vacant oval like a silent flag. A kingfisher flashed past, the wingbeat’s gust tasting of riverweed; the summit quivered but held.
Evening light turned the river bronze, and the oval patch still waited, its stones cool, untouched, tasting of nothing. Zara brushed grit from her palms, yet left the space unclaimed, tracing its border with the tip of a wet fingertip. Zephyr stacked two leftover stones near their packs, but he too skirted the gap, speaking only about supper. The river hissed along the bend, carrying away whatever words might have filled the pause between them. As the light thinned, they gathered their things; ripple marks shone across the higher column, each band tasting faintly of warm rust. Zara lifted a final slate, paused, and let her wrist hover above the waiting summit.
