English 原文
Rosa pushed the narrow door inward and sidestepped the dangling aprons that brushed her shoulders.
Pine resin, beeswax, and something like warm earth rolled over her in a layered scent that seemed to carry both forest shade and distant savanna heat.
Light from the high window caught the spectrum of half-polished stones scattered across the bench, reds sliding into golds then sinking back into raw clouded brown.
A tarnished magnifying glass lay face down beside them, circle of brass dulled almost to olive.
She added one more lump, still crusted with sandy rind, onto the already crowded tray, and the tiny table wobbled under the extra weight.
Somewhere behind her, Cedric hummed along to the radio, the notes bouncing off jars stacked in thoughtful disorder along the wall.
Rosa reached for the squat tin of beeswax that usually sat between the brushes and the water bowl, yet her fingers closed on empty wood.
The absence stilled her elbow half-way, and the workshop’s ordinary rhythm thinned as though a single gear had halted inside a clock.
"Looking for the wax?" Cedric asked, lifting his head but not pausing the slow rub of paper over amber.
She nodded toward the vacant spot, and he shrugged toward the open window where a thin breeze rattled a hanging chime.
Rosa scanned the bench, then the shelves, layers of tools, scraps, and offcuts crowding each other until edges blurred.
She exhaled sharply, lifted the tarnished glass instead, and the grease smudge on its lens smeared the world into yellow fog.
A strip of fine sandpaper lay folded near the lamp; Rosa pinched one corner, scraped it once across the brass rim, then over the glass itself.
Gray flakes gathered on her thumb, and with each pass the lens cleared, the workshop returning shard by shard through a widening pane.
She lifted the oldest piece—an oval she had polished for days—and held it beneath the renewed circle, tilting until the lamp poured straight through.
Inside the gold, a winged gnat hung in perfect suspension, veins fine as threads; she had seen it every afternoon, yet never this alive.
What collectors called the quintessence of amber—sunlight held forever—glimmered where dull rind once ruled, and the room’s smells deepened, sweet with fresh resin warmth.
She set the gnat-lit oval on the bench, swept the other stones aside, and space opened like a clear pond around the single glow.
From the corner, Cedric gave a quiet whistle but stayed with his own piece, perhaps hearing in the silence what she could not voice.
Rosa folded the sandpaper again; its edge had dulled and the fine grit left a pale, crescent-shaped bare patch on the sheet.
She slipped the worn strip into the waste box, a faint pine tang still clinging to her fingertips.
On the windowsill, the unused brush rested, its bristles darkened where wax once filled them, cooling to a dull amber of their own.
