When the Pump Matched the Channel Flow-

English 原文
Leander stepped off the sun-bleached track and down a slab of sandstone onto the irrigation path. Heat still clung to the dry dust behind him, yet a cool hush breathed beside the channel. Flat stones cantilevered over the water, their undersides dark and damp where fine spray reached. Each pace showed more of the narrow course: first the peeled grain of a swollen sluice handle, then the undulating film where shallow water skimmed over algae. A wooden spatula protruded from his satchel like a thin flag; he used it for scooping stray weed mats from the gates. Ahead, the familiar bend waited, marked by the same rust freckles that had speckled the stone since childhood, now wider, softer, paler. Tool marks still lay visible, silent admiration frozen in stone.
The murmur under his boots ran on a three-beat cycle—rush, pause, drip. Further upstream, a farmer’s hand pump squeaked at its own brisk tempo, metal joints clicking faster than the water’s voice. The two sounds travelled separately, never meeting. Leander wedged the spatula between plank and stone, levering clumped leaves free; the water barked against the sudden space, then returned to its earlier cadence. Rafferty appeared around the willow, tipping his straw hat. “Flow looks thin,” he said, letting the words ride the pump’s rhythm while his boots stayed clear of the rim. Leander nodded, paused, and pressed fingers to a fine crack along the gate’s side, noticing new granules flake away.
At the mid-morning mark the pump stroke and the channel song drifted toward the same pulse. Click-rush, click-rush—they landed together, and the stones underfoot thrummed lightly. Leander’s first instinct pushed him toward the handle; he stopped midway, palm hovering, measuring that fresh vibration. The alignment amplified the splash at the weir, lifting droplets onto the cantilevered lip of a side mouth farther down. He slipped the small, cordless blender jar from his pack—a vessel half full of grain mash for the ducks—and anchored it beside the gate so its weight steadied the plank. Then, with two careful steps, he lowered the swollen iron arm. Water lunged through the opened throat, unsettling the new balance; grit shifted, the crack widened, and the combined rhythm staggered back into separate streams.
Leander set the iron handle down; the jar stayed in place, holding the loosened gate just wide enough for a sheet of water to fan out. A thin plume rose where sunlight struck the fresh sheet, wrapping his calves with cool vapor before drifting away. He straightened, shoulders slack, and watched Rafferty crouch to study the spreading wetness in the soil. Neither spoke. Frogs resumed their measured croaks beyond the bend, one after another, now resting on the matched tempo the channel no longer kept. Behind them the pump kept its brisk clicking, and the undulating murmur below answered at its own slower pitch.
