The Recliner Beside the Kiln-

English 原文
The recliner stood a hand-span from the kiln’s brick base, its cushions oddly cool while every nearby surface breathed quiet heat. Beneath it, a threadbare rug carried gray ash footprints, glimmer from the viewing slit stitched orange bands across the worn fibers, and a tin marked for furniture restorer balanced on the right arm as if waiting its turn. Around the chair crowded stacks of unfired mugs, temperature cones, a chipped ladle, and Lyle’s notebook already dusted with flaky bark. Smoky air slipped under the shed roof, curled above Glynis’s head, and flattened into an intriguing shimmer where the rising warmth met the autumn chill outside.
Lyle added a fresh mug to the shelf, then another, then wedged a final saucer between two bowls until clay touched clay and nothing more could fit. "Right temperature?" Glynis asked, leaning to the peephole; the glow throbbed brighter against her cheeks. A log cracked within the firebox, releasing a pulse of radiant heat that made both step back. Lyle’s heel brushed the recliner, and only then did he notice the missing blanket that usually softened its back. The bare vinyl looked slick, almost indifferent, and the tiny absence unsettled the careful order he had been layering all morning.
He hesitated, palm still warm from the brick apron, eyes moving from the crowded shelf to the narrow gap where blanket and chair once met. One by one he lifted the saucer, the extra mugs, even the notebook, feeling how little they weighed compared with the press of the kiln’s work. Each object found a place on a side table farther from the heat, ash puffing lightly as they landed. The shelf emptied until only the first mug remained, centered, ringed by fine gray dust. The tin of restorer slipped from the recliner arm while he cleared, tapped the floor, and rolled against the rug; he let it stay where it stopped, contents unspilled but no longer part of the scene.
With the space cleared, Lyle returned to the kiln and repeated the gesture he had made earlier: he pressed his palm to the lowest brick, counting the silent seconds. The surface still carried steady warmth, yet the air around his wrist felt wider, less crowded. Behind him, the recliner’s cushions continued to refuse the heat, and the single mug on the shelf reflected the kiln’s orange, a small bright circle inside its unfinished rim.
