English 原文
Alaric steadied the low wooden stool with one boot, its seat showing a pale circular dent that matched nothing now in sight. A breath later he slid a fresh log into the firebox, the kiln’s pulse answering in a deeper roar that fell into its familiar cadence.
Sunlight, broken by the shed’s slatted wall, left a dappled mesh over the brick dome; the shifting glow inside answered every bright patch outside, the two rhythms never quite aligning. Between each check he arranged unfired cups on a side shelf, leaving one extra space untouched, as though a missing piece might still claim it. A cat padded across the ash, paused, then withdrew when a sudden ash squall rose and settled. The air beyond the shed stayed tranquil, only the kiln beating a steady pattern against the silence.
Mid-afternoon heat climbed; Alaric lifted the stool, meaning to rest, then halted halfway and flipped it over. The underside carried a darkened lattice of thin scorch marks, angled exactly like the kiln’s brick courses. He ran fingertips along one strip, finding minute ridges where wood had seared against hot clay long ago; the stool had once propped the heavy chamber door during loading, not served as a seat at all. He set it upright again, paused, then chose to stand, folding arms while the cone inside leaned another fraction.
Twilight pressed close, and orange leaked through the viewing slit with stronger insistence. Alaric returned the stool to its earlier place beside the log pile, this time rotating it so the scorched pattern faced the shed’s open doorway. The circular dent caught the last light; flecks of charcoal in the grain glittered faintly, a detail invisible hours before. He brushed the rim once, feeling residual warmth hum beneath the wood, and left his palm resting on the stool.
