Pigeon Flight and a Loose Brass Clamp-

English 原文
No bell rang when the platform began its lazy turn under the afternoon bulbs.
A pigeon glided down and perched on the scalloped edge of the painted canopy, claws pricking the teak strip while the wooden horses rose beneath. Brass poles shimmered with yesterday’s polish, and a faint diminution in the band organ’s march hinted that the motor had settled into its long, even haul. Bethan straddled a dapple-grey stallion near the outer rail, wrench poised at a stubborn clamp that pinned the brass pole to the saddle base. She leaned her weight through her shoulder; the metal resisted, transmitting a leaden tug along her arm before the tool slipped and tapped the pole. The clamp held fast, and the horse began its slow descent.
She exhaled, slid from the saddle, and stepped across the moving deck to the granite path that circled the ride. Rose petals, shaken earlier from a high-cut rosebush by children racing past, lay in scattered crescents against the stone. Bethan knelt to gather them, meaning only to clear the walkway, yet the different heft of each blossom drew her focus: new petals curled thick and moist; older ones felt papery, weightless, ready to drift. The pigeon fluttered down beside her sweep, head bobbing, and pecked at seed husks lodged between slabs. Its timing caught her notice—the bird waited for the platform’s crest, hopped forward during the brief pause, and retreated as the nearest horse dipped.
A rhythm existed: rise, stillness, fall. The carousel lifted every outer horse for barely a heartbeat, creating a moment when vertical force slackened. Bethan straightened, wiping petal dust from her palms, and watched the pigeon repeat its small dance. The creature’s patience embroidered the pattern like an embellish carved into wood that only daylight reveals. Without naming her thought, she stepped back onto the deck, fingers searching the underside of the brass saddle plate. The clamp, tight a minute ago, now hovered at the ride’s apex; gravity no longer jammed the parts together. A brief twist and the thread yielded, metal turning with a subdued scrape. Overhead, the clock tower beyond the cotton-candy stand chimed once, its note hanging over the afternoon.
The pigeon lifted again, wings flashing silver as another horse climbed, and Bethan paused mid-rotation, knees bent for balance, her right hand resting on the newly loosened clamp, thumb already poised to tighten it another quarter turn.
