Driftwood Stick on the Moving Dune-

English 原文
Greer stepped over the last scrub root and onto the sharp crest of the dune, the sunlit sand leaving a mineral tang on her tongue.
A bleached driftwood stick lay across the ridge, its silver grain exposed where the packed windward surface had sheared away.
She knelt beside it, pinched a pinch of grit, and tasted the salt that wind carries from a distant dry lake; the granules crackled faintly between her teeth.
Arlo waited a few strides downslope, shoulders angled against the breeze, the loose edge of his notebook fluttering like a small flag.
Along the shaded side of the stick clung a dull beige button no wider than a fingernail, something she briefly took for hardened sap while the dune’s plaintive hum rose from the slip face below.
Sand rattled behind her; a canteen had rolled from Arlo’s pack and bounced toward the lee, scattering powdery grains that tasted chalky when the gust reached her lips.
“Not again,” Arlo muttered, scrambling after it; his boot skidded, cutting a shallow scar through a ripple and sending him to one knee.
Greer pushed upright, brushed gritty sweetness from her palate with the back of her hand, and slid down the firmer windward slope to steady him while the canteen continued its slow descent.
By the time they retrieved it, a thin shadow stretched from a cloud fragment overhead, and the ridge line had already migrated a hand-width farther south.
They climbed back, silent except for their breathing and the hiss of sand underfoot, each aware of how quickly the dune rewrites every mark.
The driftwood waited, yet the beige button no longer looked fixed; its edges had unfurled into a faintly speckled disk that trembled in the moving air.
Greer crouched, lifted the stick, and a smoky spray puffed against her lips, sour as raw almond skin.
“It isn’t sap,” she said, voice lowered as though volume might break it; Arlo, the biologist among them, blinked once, then held out his palm.
She tapped the disk and a second cloud drifted across his hand, leaving a mellow aftertaste when he drew a curious breath; spores, light as dust yet carrying a story.
His first hypothesis—desert driftwood—shifted; now he traced the ringed center and spoke only two words, “Fruiting body.”
Light brightened again, the cloud passed, and the stick showed a faint brown stain where the fungus had released its cargo.
Greer set the stick back along the crest, noting how its earlier straight edge now rested at a new angle, a quiet record of the dune’s patient creep.
The bitter flavor of the residue lingered, different from the simple salt of the first mouthful.
Greer pressed the stick deeper into the firm sand.
