English 原文
Hedy lingered at the doorway, watching Elise rub a clouded lump of amber across coarse sandpaper, the scritch-scritch steady as rain on a tin roof. The pine-sweet smell of warming resin drifted toward the threshold, weaving with a faint note of mold from a damp rag forgotten under the bench. Around Elise’s tools, a thicket of narrow brushes stood bristle-up in a cracked jar, their wooden handles flecked with wax where yesterday’s polish had dried.
Beyond the window, late-afternoon light slid over the boulevard, where bicycles rolled past plane trees that tossed mellow leaves onto the asphalt. Each passing bell carried a thin metallic ring that slipped through the half-open pane and curled above the workbench like threadbare music. An aroma of street-corner chestnuts folded into the workshop air, bumping against the sharper resin scent until the two aromas seemed to assimilate, neither quite masking the other.
Hedy stepped inside and selected her own amber piece—small, egg-shaped, its interior still murky. She pressed the resin against fresh medium-grit paper; crumbs gathered in pale curls under her fingertips, and warmth quickened through the stone. Mid-stroke, her wrist paused: the usual honey glow failed to rise. She rotated the piece, squinted through the magnifying glass, and noticed a micro-ridge where coarse scratches remained. The pause stretched; breath slowed; then she changed rhythm, shorter strokes at a new angle, letting the paper’s finer bite shave the ridge flat. A clearer window emerged, revealing the lacework of an ancient wing caught forever mid-beat.
She set the polished oval on the sill beside Elise’s finished shard. Outside, a small gust tugged loose leaves along the gutter; their skitter reached the glass just as a shadow from the roofline inched across the two amber pieces. The deeper patch of shade touched the fresh window first, muting its glow while the street kept rolling, bells and chestnut smoke moving on without pause.
