English 原文
Light from the overhead skylight drifted, brightening as a cloud slid aside, and the copper plate on the etching bench flashed like a small sunrise. Linden, who had spent many afternoons at this exact slab of wood, leaned over the warm-toned metal and let the stylus glide through the dark wax. The wide table offered generous clearance on every side, yet the pattern in his mind lay cramped. He tried drawing a looping path that should have curled gently toward the edge, but the tool snagged, leaving an uneven groove. Tiny ribbons of wax clung to the stylus tip; he brushed them away with the back of a fingernail and began again. The bench stood broad and steady, its length spanning almost the full width of the vaulted room. Still, the single misstep echoed across the smooth expanse of wax, and his hand hovered above the plate.
He exhaled, set the stylus down, and crossed the open floor toward the protective glass screen. The transparent barrier kept him apart from the quiet drama of the acid bath. “Plate’s ready to etch,” the technician noted without looking up. Through the pane Linden watched the exposed copper lines darken, but the uneven loop made his knuckles tighten, a stone lodged in thought. Rather than stare longer, he turned and walked between two towering presses, their iron frames narrowing the passage into a corridor barely shoulder-wide. The path reminded him of trekking along the base of a disused quarry last spring, cliffs leaning inward until sky appeared as a slit. His palms slid over stacked drying racks, counting empty slots, then stopped as the rhythm of the gaps matched the broken curve on his plate. Across the room, ink in the open jar gathered a faint skin, pale against the black mass beneath.
The plate returned rinsed and shining; Linden rolled ink across it, pressed the damp paper, and turned the crank. Felt blankets compressed, and the press groaned once before releasing the sandwich with a soft sigh. The roller’s arc spanned the full width of the press bed, a shallow vault overhead that narrowed toward the exit and then opened again beyond the blankets. Peeling the sheet free felt like a quiet burial, the image lifting while the metal disappeared under paper fibres. The reversed print revealed that the earlier flaw now formed a ridge line, its awkwardness flowing naturally into the surrounding marks. The corridor of presses stood quietly behind him, echoed in that line’s angle. He carried the fresh pull back to the bench and laid it beside the waxed plate. Under the shifting skylight, the bench surface offered a thin, meandering fissure that traced the grain like a companion to the printed ridge.
