English 原文
Every morning Adele planted both palms on the frost-white window and counted slowly, waiting for a circle of clarity to bloom.
Today the circle stalled, no larger than a coin, although she exhaled twice and shifted more weight onto her front foot. Behind the glass, cedar branches glittered, yet a thicket of new crystal clung inside, crossing the wooden threshold and hazing even the sill. She pushed the little brass sundial closer to the pane, the metal cool against her knuckles, hoping its stored warmth might lend help. Nothing moved, and the spoon’s clink from the kitchen reminded her the room already held too many objects for so small a dawn.
She added a pebble from the riverbank, then another, building a half-moon of weights along the frame, each stone pressing the wood barely downward. With every addition the floorboard flexed, and her hips rocked to keep balance, a private dance she never rehearsed yet knew by muscle memory. At the center of the frost she traced a spiral with her thumb, the remembered wrist-twist from skipping stones. The ice lines met at a stubborn nodal knot and refused to break. She clicked her tongue. "Still asleep, are you?" The quiet sentence slid into the cold air, answered only by the stove’s soft breath.
Polishing the garden’s tarnished sundial last summer had required circling strokes, light, then lighter, letting the metal speak; her hand resumed that pattern before thought arrived. The thumb found the knot again, yet her shoulders eased, weight shifting back, and the pressure scoured just enough frost to loosen a ring. The victory tipped the half-moon of pebbles; one slid, tapped the frame, and tumbled, cracking away a wide sheet of ice in a single sigh. Specks of loosened frost drifted upward, catching light and settling again like slow snow. Beyond the threshold of that sudden clearing, outside trees sharpened into view, while inside shards of crystal littered the ledge like crushed sugar.
Adele lifted the remaining pebble, regarded its smooth side, set it alone on the sill, and stepped back, palms leaving the cold timber. Cold air no longer pressed against her chest, and her balance shifted softly to the centers of both heels, knees easing without conscious cue. Ulric’s voice drifted from the kitchen, a question about porridge that hung unanswered, then subsided into the stove’s low hum. Around her, the room’s many objects waited in quieter arrangement, their edges framed by the single clear circle. A bead of meltwater thickened below the circle and inched downward, the only motion inside the quiet glass.
