Nina’s palms paused mid-press; no seed could cajole the bird closer, yet it seemed a small harbinger carrying tomorrow’s nest in its beak. She peeled the first print, corners rising in a single breath-length lift, then pivoted, tore another sliver from a trimmed edge, and set the offering beside the ledge before returning for a lighter second pull.

The final sheet unfurled thinner grey across the scales and joined its sharper sibling on the drying rack. Nina wiped sumi from her fingertips, folded the damp cloth, and walked back through the shoji, leaving the door ajar just wide enough for wings.

Ink cooled inside the dish, a shallow mirror now ringed by scattered feathers of paper. Two prints lay weighted, the darker one crisp, the paler echo showing every scale like faint ripples after a bell’s strike. On the sill a twist of white fibre quivered in a draft that passed, and the empty hook above the bench held its silence between one bamboo chime and the next.
