English 原文
A thin ribbon of beeswax cooled against the brass stamp, its sheen dulling each second as air carried away the warmth.
Tobias, perched barefoot on a low wooden platform beside the stamping table, watched the wax settle and trusted the coming pattern to remain flawless. He pressed the block onto white cotton—press, hold, lift—and a near-invisible square appeared, exactly where he had imagined, giving the moment the tidy certainty of practiced arithmetic. Iris waited with her own stamp, two breaths behind, respecting his rhythm the way chess players respect turn order.
The cotton shifted when the next stamp landed, a wrinkle he had not smoothed beforehand rippling outward like a slow wave beneath a boat. His fingers tightened anyway, and he placed the brass again, trusting pressure to erase that tremor. Wax bled beyond the carved border, a faint crescent where there should have been a clean corner. Iris made a careful step up onto the same platform, set her stamp lightly, and the fabric lay flat, resisting the urge to fold under her touch. She glanced toward him but said nothing; the silence carried its own diplomacy across the table.
Suspended in the indigo bath, the cloth drank colour fast, and the blurred square surfaced first, darker than its neighbours, impossible to ignore. Tobias lifted one corner toward the high window; through thin seams in the wax, narrow rivers of crimson threaded where only white ought to remain. He hesitated, thumb rubbing the brass handle still glistening with droplets, then lowered the cloth back, choosing to finish rather than begin again. Iris slid her piece beside his, shoulder brushing linen, their breathing settling into a single slow rhythm.
Later, beneath the racks, dried wax flaked away like thin petals, revealing a lattice of planned squares stitched by spontaneous red veins. Tobias detached the last flake, traced one unexpected line, and the perfect grid he had pictured earlier dissolved into something restless yet complete. He loosened his grasp, leaving the stamp on the table’s edge. Crimson droplets kept ticking back into the basin while Tobias rested his palm against the cooling brass.
