Yesterday's workload still crowded the cozy workshop: half-carved toys, curled shavings, and a narrow barrel full of fine sawdust. Grey lifted the same block again, set it on the smooth pine, and gave a gentle push. The piece glided, then slowed at a steady rate, its edges humming a soft scrape against the grain. Curious, he tried another surface. He dragged the block over rough oak beside the vise; the deeper ridges caught its corners, shaking loose a light quantity of dust that fell like pale rain.

Grey sought a third test. He unrolled a square of felt kept for polishing and placed the block on the dark fabric. "Listen to this," he said, tapping the top once. He nudged it forward. The block barely moved, trapped by the thick nap, and stopped after two finger-lengths. Grey chuckled, picked it up, and slid it back toward the pine. The sudden motion carried the block farther than before. It reached the table’s edge, tipped, and clipped the side of the sawdust barrel. The barrel rocked, squeaked against the stone floor, and a ribbon of dusty curls spilled across Grey’s boots.

He stepped sideways, grabbed a short broom, and swept the new pile into a neat mound. Bits of sawdust clung to the broom’s straw and scratched along the floor tile. Grey brushed the straw against the rim of the barrel to shake them free, then leaned the broom inside the corner rack.
