English 原文
Cold grooves of the iron press chilled Clyde's palm when he slid the carriage forward. Beside him, Ella lifted a shallow tray of metal letters. Each block clicked against its neighbor and set a quick rattle along the wooden rails. A sweet-sharp smell of fresh ink drifted near the roller station. It mixed with the faint scent of metal oil. A traveling researcher named Miles leaned over the type-setting table. He traced the reversed words with a magnifying glass. "Hear that ring?" Clyde asked. "Louder than yesterday," Ella replied. Clyde pulled the tall lever. A bright ring burst from the press frame and bounced between the shelves. The sound tailed off in a shaky echo that disturbed the drying papers above. Miles raised an eyebrow. Ella shrugged. The loose vibration slipped a letter out of line. Miles bent closer to explore how sound traveled inside the old machinery. They loaded a fresh sheet of paper on the bed.
The platen met the forme. The ring broadened into a dense hum. It passed through the counter and set the ink-jars trembling. The sheet emerged blurred on one edge; the stray letter had slipped again. Clyde searched nearby shelves and tugged a thick felt blanket from a delivery box. Its fuzzy surface carried dried specks of blue ink. The blanket offered clear utility inside the shop. Cloth absorbed sound better than bare metal. Ella folded it and slid it between the press bed and frame. The next pull sounded different. The former ring dulled to a soft creak, but a new vibration reached the tall rack. Pegs tapped together like quiet cymbals while fresh pages quivered along their cords. Ink beads keep sliding toward the lower corners. A low hum under the table deepens and travels along the floor.
