A lantern bulb behind amber glass flickered above the old press. Flora guided the heavy lever hard enough for the springs to compress and rebound in a steady rhythm. Each fresh sheet slipped out smooth and delicate, shining where the wet ink caught the light. A grey cat crouched on the type-setting table, whiskers twitching at every thump. Flora lifted the printed sheet and hooked its corner over a cotton line. She watched the stretched cord remain taut still. More pages joined, and the line bore the growing weight without complaint. She turned a brass knob on the side of the rack. The motion tightened the axle so the cord kept its tension. A guilty smear of ink marked her thumb. She wiped it on her apron and reached for the next blank page.

Seconds later, the cord began to sag anyway. The earlier heat from the press warmed the cotton until each fiber loosened. The wet pages pulled it lower with slow, silent insistence. The cat noticed the gentle dip and, with sudden interest, sprang toward the moving shape. Its landing set the line into an uneven wobble; several sheets brushed against each other, threatening to smear. Flora slid two steps sideways, palm still stained. She pushed the lever only halfway, giving the springs less force. The plate rose at that softer, slow pace. She used her free hand to shift the weight. She pinched the middle sheet, slid it outward, and spread the others along the cord. The line flexed, then lifted a finger-width higher. The cat lost interest and wandered toward the warm press bed. Flora carefully nudged the final spacer into line. Above her, the rack rope hummed under fresh tension.

沒多久，繩子還是慢慢下垂。之前印刷機的熱度溫熱了棉纖維，線條鬆開，溼紙片緩緩往下拉。一看到柔和的凹陷，灰貓忽然有興趣，跳向那移動的影子。它落地時帶出不均勻的晃動，幾張紙互相擦碰，幾乎抹花。芙蘿拉側身兩步，帶墨的手掌仍在發亮。她只將把手壓到一半，讓彈簧受力較小。印版以較慢速度上升，她空出的手調整重量：夾住中間那張紙，向外拉開，再把其他紙片分散在繩上。線條彎曲後抬高了一指寬。灰貓失去興趣，走向溫熱的機臺。芙蘿拉小心把最後一塊間距片推正。她頭頂的繩子在新張力下發出輕微的嗡響。
