English 原文
Inside the cedar-shelved workshop the brass clock ticked a measured beat, while beyond the high window a parade band broke and regrouped in ragged bursts. Zephyr stayed beside the marble counter, ears catching both rhythms yet hands moving only to steady a small amber vial. An unused stool rested against the wall, its cushion slightly indented, the air above it undisturbed. Hattie entered carrying fresh test strips, halted at the indent, then laid the papers where another pair once waited. Neither spoke of the space, yet every gesture curved around it like iron filings around a silent magnet.
A pipette drew bergamot, one drop every six ticks, each tick followed by a faint tap as liquid touched paper. Cognition tangled briefly when two drops landed together; Zephyr lifted the strip to the light, eyes narrowing at the uneven halo. The bergamot’s opening felt flamboyant, a citrus fanfare that escaped too quickly, leaving quieter geranium to spread with the unhurried generosity of warm air. Zephyr paused, set the strip down, wiped fingers on linen, resumed the count, only now the clock’s tempo sounded doubled. Outside, the parade’s brass receded, yet the inner beat kept pressing, insistent as a metronome against the ribs.
Hattie flipped a flattened parcel board onto the counter; its creases traced rectangles that once contained something fragile. “Here,” she said, sliding a vial toward a drawn corner on the flattened board. She lingered a breath, as though the dismantled cardboard invited anyone to think outside the box once more. When the bottles settled upon those improvised compass points, their colours formed a loose constellation, teeming with life even before scent spoke. A sudden hush under the clock marked the moment the parade completely vanished, and the gap where the stool waited grew louder than any trumpet.
Zephyr inhaled, then stepped back to reset the nose, letting corridor air rinse receptors the way early lessons had taught. Returning seconds later, the blend smelled changed, its earlier bravado softened, as though the empty seat itself had calmed the volatility. Neither student spoke; graphite recorded ratios, while the clock kept carving identical intervals that now stretched wider between breaths. Hattie gathered spare strips, placed one gently on the stool, and left it there, a white flag to whatever absence lingered. Zephyr’s fingertip hovered above the brass lever of the scale, pausing at the downbeat of another tick.
