English 原文
Water slapped softly against the wooden tub, setting a slow rhythm in the small laundry room. Merritt stood beside the folding table while warm air pressed against his cheeks, and steam drifted around his knees. A cloth pouch bumped his hip each time he shifted; dry pins inside clicked together like pebbles.
He knew the motion of the task by muscle memory. He lifted a soaked sheet, let the corner slide across the rim, and fed it onto the high line. The added weight pulled the rope lower, and drops worried the pale soap bar on the ledge until its edge turned thin and curved. Freedom lasted one beat before the sheet’s corner sagged, slipped free, and brushed the wet tiles. "That corner keeps escaping," Vaughn remarked from the basin, his voice muffled by rising steam.
Merritt reached for another pin. As he stretched, a hidden coin rolled from the loosened hem, struck the floor, and skittered under a metal bucket. The bucket rocked, collected momentum, and toppled against his boot, splashing cool water onto his trouser leg. He steadied the bucket, then snapped two pins onto the rebellious cloth edge. The line lifted a little, yet the rope still bowed under the load. Merritt wiped splashes from his sleeve, then pinched the cloth once more. The corner slipped free again and hung lower than before.
