When the Wooden Rake Split on the Salt Pan -

English 原文
“The rake is heavier today,” Zola said.
Keane slid the long handle across the gritty ledge. Sunlight flashed on the thin film of water. The rake’s blunt teeth met the crust with a sharp scratch that echoed between shallow ponds. Keane pushed, and the worn wood dragged, raising a pale ridge that crackled. Salt dust peppered his sandals; its dry feeling rasped over his toes. Dry heat shimmered above the shallow ponds, and a faint mineral smell drifted past.
Zola stepped beside him with a small wicker basket painted in optimistic orange stripes. She tipped the basket, yet coarse grains caught on the rim and refused to slide. To adapt, she tapped the edge, but the crystals gripped the weave and stayed. Keane shifted his stance, lowered his hands, and launched the rake forward along a fresh line. The teeth skidded, then snagged on a thicker patch, and the handle shuddered in his palms. Each new stroke scraped a brighter stripe, but the growing weight of wet salt slowed his arms. He pointed at a cracked plastic cup half buried in the crust. It had once held soil on their apartment balcony.
A sudden pop sounded when the rake struck a hidden pebble under the salt. The handle jerked left. The jolt opened a thin split halfway along the wood. Bent teeth now pointed sideways. Zola lifted the tool, pressed the crack with her thumb, and set it down again without speaking. White scratches cut across the pan where they had worked. The crystals still clung tight.
