A soft scrape came from the wooden rake on the pan’s white crust. Beyond the low wall, faint traffic hummed and then thinned in the bright noon.
Warm air carried a sharp mineral smell over the shallow ponds. Heat wavered above the brine, and a thin haze lifted where the water met the edge.
Gwen held the long handle and drew the rake along the rim. The tool rasped, and a narrow ridge rose where the crust broke. Basil stood on the dry ledge beside her and braced the light basket against his shin. He set his paper pinwheel on the platform; its stick felt warm in his hand. “The edge dried fast in this sun,” Gwen said, and she lifted another thin sheet that cracked like a dry leaf. Basil touched a damp patch with one fingertip. The grains clung to his skin and felt almost hot, then cooled as he lifted his hand. He pressed the pinwheel’s stick into a softer place and drew a thin line; the line held its shape, and tiny sparks of salt glistened along it.
He put his small wooden dragon boat on a shiny wet spot while he pushed the basket a little closer. Gwen raked another stripe, and the air over the pans shimmered again. By the time Basil lifted the toy, a pale, boat-shaped dry patch showed on the damp crust. A faint ring of brighter salt circled it. Basil said, “The shape stayed on the crust.” Gwen leaned in with a short laugh in her breath and nodded once. She raked a slower pass, and Basil traced a second thin line with the warm stick so it crossed her new ridge.
