English 原文
"The tin just rolled away."
Dale steadied the narrow cylinder before it reached the floor.
The overhead bulb buzzed with a steady hum as he began to amble between tidy shelves.
Each step scuffed the concrete and sent a faint echo toward the loading door.
Caps sized for youth hung from a peg, their plastic brims tapping the wall when he brushed past.
He lifted a soap bar wrapped in brown paper; a faint forest pine scent escaped and mixed with the dusty air.
Beside it a jar of glass marbles waited; when his fingertip touched the lid, the marbles answered with a light rattle.
A sticker on the side showed a gleeful yellow sun, its grin chipped at one corner.
Dale twisted the cold metal lid.
Metal scraped glass and produced a short, sharp creak that lingered like thin resonance along the aisle.
High above, on a beam that crossed the ceiling, an owl shifted its striped wings and added a low hoot.
The hoot bounced against the boxes, met the lingering resonance, and turned into a curious wobble of sound.
Dale flinched and paused, then twisted again from another angle.
This time the lid vibrated under his palm, but it still refused to loosen.
He set the jar on a rubber mat; the next twist sent only a muffled thud through the mat.
The owl watched, head tilted, eyes round and still.
Dale pressed once more; the jar only quivered, marbles clinking in uneven rhythm.
Fine rings marked the lid where his thumb had slipped.
The metal kept rattling in place.
