English 原文
"What turned this jar sideways?" Lena held her palm under the glass to catch it if it slid. Cool light fell from the single bulb, and a faint hum joined the soft scrape of their shoes. A calico cat sat on the window ledge and blinked, its tail hanging like a thin rope. On a peg above the shelf hung a puzzlement of wire rings, small loops inside larger ones. Beside it, a narrow coil of copper waited, its loops tight except for one loose turn near the end. Zane looked along the plank. "It leaned before we came in," he said.
He set a thin piece of foam under one edge of the jar and watched the neck tilt a little more. The glass pressed the wedge and stayed there, not rolling, just leaning. Lena tried a round cork under the far side; weight shifted, and the jar wobbled once, then settled. She touched the lid and felt only a light drag, no sticky grip, only smooth metal on smooth glass. Above them, the wire rings swayed a finger-width, then stopped; nothing else moved. The cat dropped to a low carton and stepped inside; a small tuft of fluff clung to its paw and rode the air. Lena balanced a flat tin lid on two other jars, like a little seesaw across the gap. Zane slid the loose turn of the copper coil so its tip rested on one end of the lid. The coil swung like a small pendulum and tapped; the lid tipped down, then rocked back. The cat’s tail brushed the hanging copper, and a single loop unrolled and lowered the tip; the seesaw eased to the other side and held. They added a second foam wedge and a short cork ring near the middle, then moved on to the next shelf and copied the trick with lighter jars.
Two foam wedges met under a balanced lid between the jars, one from Lena and the other from Zane. Zane tapped the lid with one finger; it rocked once and balanced.
