English 原文
The pull-chain bulb above the cellar steps buzzed and dipped, then steadied again. A small mouse paused on the second step, whiskers forward over the cool edge. Cold air lay across the stone floor, with a faint smell of apples. A high vent let in a thin dawn breeze, and a pale island of light formed below it. The edge of a canvas cover fluttered, and a paper bag rustled against a jar. Between ceramic pots, a narrow lane ran along the wall toward a low shelf. The mouse slid into that space, ribs brushing cool clay, nose making tiny puffs. Its breath crossed a glass bottle’s mouth, and a thin whistle answered from the neck.
At the bottom step, a loose thread lay; the mouse gripped it with careful teeth. A steady draft tugged the thread sideways, so the mouse pinned it into a notch. Above, Mae opened the door and leaned in. "There you are, little friend," she said. The moving door sent a soft gust down the stairs, and the paper bag billowed. It slid into the lane and blocked the narrow way for a breath or two. Air swept over another bottle’s lip and made a round, hollow whistle in the corner. Dust lifted, and a sharper boundary showed under the shelf where the gust could not reach. The mouse pressed low, ears tilted back, and waited as the bag slowly deflated. When the air calmed, the bag sagged away; the thread trailed from the notch. The door eased toward its frame, and the bag settled flat across the floor. Dawn light widened under the vent, and new dust covered the cleared lane in chalk.
